Tasmanian Courts VC Upgrade

Five Contact Group technicians standing in front of the Supreme Court in Hobart, for the Tasmanian Courts VC Upgrade

Contact Group’s specialist AV team have just completed a major VC upgrade within the Tasmanian Courts, which was one of the most complex projects they’ve ever undertaken.

The $1.15 million AV and VC upgrade for the Department of Justice involved about 4-thousand hours of work over a 21-month period.

Contact Group designed, sourced, and installed all the equipment for seven different court rooms, providing cutting edge technology to facilitate video conferencing and the general operations of the Hobart Supreme Court, Burnie Supreme Court, Launceston Magistrates Court and Devonport Magistrates Court.

The team led by Contact Group’s State AV Manager, Andrew Otley, faced a range of challenges, due to the complexities around working inside the Tasmanian Courts and managing seven different court rooms, timelines, product lists and planning for seven different shutdowns.

“Courts need four to five months lead time and with the ever-changing ETAs on equipment it was a big challenge to manage,” Andrew Otley said.

Adding to the complexities, the project had to be redesigned three times due to global product supply issues.

The design was based around a product which had already been used and proven to be a solid technology, but with lead times varying between six months and over 24 months, the team made the decision to proceed with alternate technology.

Despite the challenges Contact Group delivered the project on time and on budget, with the client extremely happy with the end result.

The project has already achieved greater efficiencies in Tasmania’s Judicial System, with fast and reliable VC technology resulting in increased court sittings and better access to legal representation.

Well done to everyone involved!
