In January 2026, our Hobart technicians completed work on the University of Tasmania’s new inner-city campus, The Forest.
Contact Group was sub-contracted to carry out the dry fire installation, as well as the CCTV and Access Control at the redeveloped Forestry Tasmania building, which will house 3000 students and more than 300 staff.
The $131-million restoration project saw the old offices and atrium transformed into an inner-city hub for learning, research, collaboration and community, including highly adaptable, multi-use teaching spaces for Business and Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences.
Project Manager Paul Gleeson said the building presented unique challenges, particularly with work carried out within the restored heritage dome as part of the fire protection system installation. Careful planning and close coordination were required to integrate modern safety systems into the existing structure.
The dry fire system installed was an Ampac addressable detection system with amplified occupant warning, providing a high level of protection while meeting the project’s strict safety and compliance requirements.
He said the entire team deserved recognition, given the complexity of the project, the expansion of the original scope of works and the tight delivery timeframes.
“It was great to play a small role in delivering this impressive learning facility, which will become one of the University of Tasmania’s most significant sites and a key part of Hobart’s inner-city landscape,” Mr Gleeson said.
