Project Overview

The North West Regional Hospital provides high quality health care and specialist services to North West Tasmania and King Island. It offers services in medical, surgical and allied health specialties through inpatient and outpatient departments. The hospital caters for the emergency resuscitation, surgery and intensive care of most trauma patients and other medical conditions.

In 2013 Contact Group were awarded the electrical services contract for the CCC and DEM upgrade by VOS construction.

The project included the construction of a new 3-level Cancer Centre, incorporating oncology and radiation services, additional MRI services, a Linac Bunker and control room to provide radiation treatment for cancer patients, Chemotherapy Treatment Chairs, Palliative Care Capacity, Clinical Trial Facilities, Specialist Consulting rooms, the expansion of the existing Department of Emergency Medicine to provide additional resuscitation bays, acute treatment bays a reconfigured ambulance bay, triage station and treatment rooms within the constraints of the reconstruction of the facility within a fully functioning acute hospital setting.

Contact Group was engaged to provide the full suite of electrical industry requirements to the new and existing upgraded facilities to ensure the medical facility was transformed into a state of the art medical facility capable of providing latest technology medical procedures and treatment to the population of the North West Coast of Tasmania.

Contact Group provided the following services to the new facility: IP Platform Nurse Call System, Switchboard Construction and installation, Emergency Generator Backup Power supply, Fire Detection, Dali Lighting Control, MATV services, Security and Access Control Systems, Medical Testing to AS3003 standards, Fibre Optic and Structured Cabling Communications Services, Medical Emergency Paging Systems, Power Reticulation and Distribution, Lighting, Power and Essential Service Power provision.

Project Scope & Design

• All Data, Security, MATV, Power, Lighting, and Phone services for the new building works.

• New site main switchboard to accommodate the new building works and a new 700KVA Generator that was designed to run synchronously with the existing generator.

• Site wide fire detection and EWIS system upgrade

• Site wide new IP Nurse Call system upgrade.

• New fully certified Panduit Cat 6 data end to end data solution

• Integration of BMS, security, lighting (DALI), messaging platform, and nurse call system to enable the required hospital scoped work flows.

A large emphasis in the design was put on Hospital wide communication and workflow management. A state of the art Amcom IP messaging platform was rolled out site wide as the platform to do this. It collects information and alarms from the BMS, nurse call, duress, FIP and security system and process and controls the workflows accordingly.

Project Challenges

Both the site wide fire system and nurse call upgrades posed many challenges along the way. Our staff were required to liaise constantly with nursing staff to ensure daily infection control procedures were adhered too and in most cases we were required to erect temporary infection control barriers around the rooms we were working in.

Contact Group have worked alongside the electrical consultant, builder and client to ensure the dynamic design is keep active to ensure all obstacles are able to be dealt with on a daily basis.
